oh hi
|
| I got my iMac it is gigantic we got a good deal on an unopened 20" from eBay, and I was pretty skeptical until it appeared on my doorstep. This rules.
Getting used to new things - I use new Leopard all the time at work, but not anything more than Safari and iTunes. New iPhoto is a bit different but I'm getting it. I can run Tweetdeck, and I've been retrying new versions of programs I used to hate with new, magical success.
Any other app recs? I've been up way too late every night playing. I'm especially looking for something (in-browser, a widget, whatever!) that will post the same thing to Blogger and LJ, just for easiness' sake. I want to neglect them equally :) | comments: Leave a comment |

| so christmas usually makes me go all weird and i make a million things. i'm making way less stuff this time because i didn't quit my job in the first week of december like i did last year.
i bought a ton of stuff from etsy. i've tried to stick to nearly all handmade things, except for useful massproduced artifacts. no crappy knick-knacks, though. santa mugs from china be damned.
but i AM making a few things, yes. mostly embroidered fabric cases for bill's delicious album. but there were still some tiny children to consider.. in a stroke of genius (if i do say so), i remembered my tiny "triangle cat" pattern from a few years ago. i scaled it up a lot and came up with these:

and it should be noted that i gave them hilarious paws:

fleece is really the most horrible fabric ever, but it's great for stuffed animals. it's extra huggable, and you don't really have to pin it. the nap kind of velcros it in place. (i won't buy fleece by the yard except out of the remnant clearance bin at jo-ann, because it's 75% off, so i end up taking whatever prints are in there. the guy on the right? his print is RACECARS.) | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| Last night I started to write a longish post about all the concerts I've been to.. Sort of. All the ones that I have ticket stubs from, other things I don't have evidence of having gone to except my memory, etc. I didn't make an effort to count hall shows or basement shows because there have been way too many.. I stayed up til 2 as it was.
I crashed my browser researching the shows because I was trying to remember band lists from festivals and opening acts and stuff. I ended up just writing it all into a text file. At first it was just a list, but I started throwing in memories/reviews as I was going because.. that's what you do. The majority of things I attended were when I was still an evil teenager so I'm sure some of the stuff is at least a little funny.
When mixtapeattack gets finished, I think that'll be my contribution. Nostalgia.
(By the way, Philadelphia-area people, save yourself the broken heart and never look over the complete R5 show list. You will cry, because chances are you [like me] missed about 10,000 things you would have loved to see. If only I had been a little older and a little more adventurous..) | comments: 5 comments or Leave a comment |
| lots of stuff happened blah blah blah i have five days in a row off blah blah blah i've been making stuff and listing it on etsy blah blah blah i've been making stuff to give as presents blah blah blah
mostly we just talk about hugo and hang out with him
he does this all the time. it is just the tip of his amazingness iceberg. | comments: Leave a comment |
| for the thirty-billionth time in my life, I have SO MANY IDEAS and THINGS I WANT TO MAKE AND DO... and feel like I have no time to do them. I've been staying later and later at work because I keep having more and more stuff to do. Then I come home and I feel bad if I go straight upstairs to make stuff instead of hanging out with Bill. There are things on my to-make list that have a huge priority over other things, but I'm being so scatterbrained that it means I end up not working on anything. Other stuff too, but yeah.
sigh
We've had Hugo for a week now, and between the two of us we've uploaded seven videos to youtube (his and mine) and there are like ten million pictures on Bill's site.. yeah. He's pretty awesome, as far as cats go. At first he was super needy - mewing if we were out of sight for thirty seconds - now he likes hanging out with us but doesn't get upset when we disappear. He also loves playing with everything, which we know turn into something more like hunt behaviors as he gets older so we will have to watch out for our hamster and fishes. He and Alfie are already pretty friendly, or at least equally curious about one another. We'll see how that goes. Hugo can get in and out of her room easily on his own so I'm not concerned.
Wheeeee. | comments: Leave a comment |
| Since we got back from our trip, we've gone out to do things almost every day. We went out to dinner most nights - Horizons, Blue Sage, VB (twice), the bakery, Pad Thai, the Thai place in Princeton, and others.. We went out to a couple of haunted house things this weekend. Had visitors other nights. I had to go to my mom's to do some computery things Saturday. Lots of stuff. I haven't really had a true break from people for a while.. Bill is out right now so I have a little me-time. Not as much as I'd like (a whole day of nobody! or just him!) but it's a good start.
I *still* have a bunch of things I wanted to put on etsy, but we've been so busy I haven't even had a chance to take pictures. SIGH.
I think I need to go put on some sweatpants. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
| We got back from TEH EUROPE Pics and a bit of storytelling on Bill's site. Skip to page 7 for laughing at Bon Bon Land.
( annnnnnd... )
It took the better part of the week to fix our sleeping schedules, but following that I got back on the making stuff wagon. I sewed for a few hours yesterday and today, I started listing things on etsy, I've signed up for two challenges, might be entering a charity art show in two weeks, and I'm gearing up for this year's Holiday Gift Blitz (still mostly don't know what to make for that one).
I also managed to buy a copy of Anathem.. I'm only fifty or so pages in, but I really hope to finish it by the end of the week. It *is* almost a thousand pages. Ohwell. | comments: 7 comments or Leave a comment |
| Where we were last weekend: First two days of the qualifiers for the World's Strongest Man 2008. It was (is! the finals are this weekend) in Charleston, WV. Pictures.
Mariusz is huge!

.....and we leave for Germany/Denmark/Sweden on Saturday. OMG! | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| My computer may or may not be dying. The battery won't charge when it's in the machine and plugged in. I took it to work, took it out of the machine, and put it on our battery charger. It wouldn't charge then, either. Yesterday the machine started when I plugged it into a power cord at work, but refused to start off the power cord at least two dozen times after I came home. It wouldn't start with the battery in or out. Took it to the Apple Store this afternoon. It started off the cord there. It's home now, working off the cord again. The battery still says 0% - it doesn't have an X over it or anything. It thinks it should be charging and it isn't. Bill has an external drive (that he used to transfer data off *his* dying computer two weeks ago) so I'm throwing some files I want onto it now.
I have an appointment to get it diagnosed with an Apple tech tomorrow afternoon. Driving all the way back to Bridgewater is still closer and less trafficky than going to Cherry Hill or Marlton. They really need to open one of those stores in Lawrenceville or something. GIVE ME THE CONVENIENCE OF PROXIMITY TO YOUR PRODUCTS. | comments: Leave a comment |
| I kind of love Rihanna in an I'll-never-buy-that-record sort of way. Everything about "Disturbia" is like.. a weird girly pop version of "Closer." Like.. the beat in the song is similar, just sped up. The video is also similar, but in focus and featuring more ass and less taxidermy. Heh.
MTV is still using the Madonna/Britney slobberkiss to get people to watch the VMAs. Pfahaha. It keeps popping up in the corner of the screen. HWARF! | comments: Leave a comment |
| I love how all the food at Pizza Hut is the same. Pan pizza: greasy dough covered in cheese and tomato sauce. Regular breadsticks: greasy dough with parmesan/seasoned topping and tomato sauce for dipping. Cheesy breadsticks: greasy dough covered in cheese and tomato sauce for dipping. Cinnamon sticks: greasy dough covered in bizarre cinnamon-sugar mixture with teeth melting icing for dipping. NEW CHOCOLATE DUNKERS: greasy dough covered in chocolate chips with chocolate sauce for dipping.
It's like every time their board says "We should offer new products!" they just put toppingless greasy bread on the table, and brainstorm a list of things to smother it with. | comments: Leave a comment |

| I redid my studio room a couple weekends ago.. We rented a steam cleaner and I moved all the furniture around and blah blah. It's still pretty cluttered, but it's infinitely better than before.
Horizontal working surfaces are visible. Supplies are in their homes. It is kind of neat, and also conducive to making things. I CAN GET TO IT! I CAN DO IT!
So I'm trying to make at least one small thing a day, or get an hour's worth of work done on a larger thing. Today is only Day Two of this goal, and the next couple of weeks ought to be sort of crrr-r-r-r-r-r-azy with Alice-related work, and THEN I'm off to Europe for a week, but.. I have a lot of stuff to do. (I am also trying to remember to post more on teh squishblog, so taking photos of my little daily works might be helpful in that!)
If you ever have a creative block in anything you do, you should pick up What It Is by Lynda Barry. She writes one of my favorite comics, and her book is effing brilliant. | comments: Leave a comment |
| So Sunday the 13th was my birthday. My parents brought my grandmother up. Dad made me a big pitcher of margaritas, we had nachos, played a lot of Wii, went swimming, etc. It was nice. My grandmother crumbled Tostitos all over our living room floor. My mom's birthday is on the 15th, so we gave her her present (USB turntable for ripping LPs to MP3).
They left sometime in the evening. Later, I went upstairs to find Olaf being all.. not good. WTF. We hung out on the couch all night. He started having seizures at like 3am, I took him to the vet across the street from us at 7:30am - when they open. Ferrets never come back from seizures. You might get them semiconscious for a bit, they might crawl around, but it just happens again. This is the third time (Benny and Bjorn first).. Just.. ugh. I'd spent hours upstairs Sunday morning and he was FINE. wtfffffff. So yeah, we got to the vet at 7:30, I told them I just wanted them to give him the Shot.. But he died wrapped up in a blanket in my arms before the vet even made it into the room. It was awful. Like. I've done the Shot a couple of times, holding and talking and it's terrible, but this was way different, and worse. It was a lovely birthday present.
I can't tell if Alfie is upset about it or not. She's so crrrrAAAAAAzy!%$# that it's hard to say if she's lonely or not. She's definitely sleeping more and has gained a few ounces, so I guess she might miss him a bit.
At any rate, I had him cremated, and now his box is sitting next to Bjorn's and they'll be together forever. If I had a spare several thousand dollars I'd totally have them made into diamonds by one of those weird companies. Sigh. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| ksdjfn oh well.. ghost in the shell was on, and i couldn't turn it off.
i've been rather lazed-out, watching a lot of movies on tv. i watched akira the other day, and spent all weekend with abcfamily on, watching all the harry potter movies. this even led to watching GOF two times IN A ROW last night - it came on at 5 and 8:30. jesus.
i drew a coelacanth while watching akira. it goes like this:

then i started on the amy butler weekender pattern. it is a huuuuuge bag. it's taking forever, because you have to make cording (you CAN use prebought, but i made it, because part of using patterns is "learn something new!!"), and there's stabilizer on every freaking surface, so there's a lot of basting, yadda yadda. oh and you don't get ALL the pattern pieces: it tells you just to measure and cut all the straight rectangles. so that was annoying, especially because the pattern for this one bag costs two or three times as much as other pattern *sets*. i'm sure that the bag will turn out pretty crooked in the end. i also decided to use ohhhh six different fabrics instead of just the two called for, so it might be pretty ugly too! yay. (realization: i cut a really dark fabric for the interior. i hate dark bag interiors because you can't find things. dilemma: do i change it, or just go with what i have already cut? AGH.) in-progress photos have been taken, but not uploaded, because my camera battery is dead.
*** the wallets by tinymeat on etsy are my favorite and i am totally going to buy one soon. i used to have a nice handmade one with an ice cream sundae on it, but that one was stolen out of my purse at work one day. i replaced it with this sort-of-awful camo skulls wallet from target. i always buy dude wallets because i prefer the bi-fold structure. it only needs to fit cash and cards, not change and checkbooks and shit like that. those have their own containers. big wallets don't fit in my pocket, and are therefore shunned. anyway i'm down to about five designs i really like.. it's hard because they have like 200 to choose from.
my grandmother was probably diagnosed with breast cancer today, and immediately whisked into an operating room to remove it.. the doctors were sure last week just from imaging, but today would have been the final word from a pathologist. they were all very "oh, you'll be FIIIIIIIIINE" about it, so i guess no one is too worried in immediate terms - she's really up on getting all that stuff taken care of so it's very early detection. she's in great health besides that, and isn't on any prescription medications, so i guess it's ok. my mom went down yesterday to take her to the hospital and stuff. depending on the outcomes of things, mom might be toting grammom back to nj for radiation treatments.
i get to be 26 on sunday. hooray? i'm not doing anything but aging. | comments: 3 comments or Leave a comment |
| blah blah
Monday, Pam and I ducked out of work for an hour to go to Princeton's awards ceremony because Stephen Colbert was the keynote speaker. We got to see him get some kind of award (something like "The Deserved Vanity Award" and it was mounted on a mirror), but the whole thing was taking forever, and Pam had an appointment with someone, so we left before he gave his speech. BUT they were filming it and streaming it live online, so I watched it anyway. It was pretty sweet.
I've been working on some Alice stuff.. I made a 4.5x3' fabric version of a sheet ripped from a steno pad, complete with sewn red and blue lines and the ragged stuff at the top. It looks good. I passed it off to Jen on Thursday night. I hope it works for the sets.. It wasn't particularly difficult to make and I really like the way it looks, so if I have to make many of them it won't be taxing. Now I'm trying to figure out how to build tiny umbrellas to mount on flashlights. I've been thinking about them for aaaaages but just started testing my patterns/ideas within the past week.
I sort of stagnated on making some other things. I did a ton of tiny embroidery, but failed to finish it into *something* except one pin. Which I will soon list on etsy. I want to make a bunch of things with these little birdie embroideries, and donate the proceeds to charity, but I don't know if I should just make them all into pins.. Still. I inexplicably made two sales last week and my pre-Christmas listings expired, so I only have five things left up. Restocking needs to happen!
Work proceeds at an amazing pace; I'm never not busy. I'm trying to keep ahead of the sales but it's been a bit difficult because of the sheer volume of loaners I've been dealing with.
Also I reeeally want to buy a bunch of stuff from BPAL (I haven't in like three years) and etsy. It is SO HARD OMG. I made a list of things I wanted to try from BPAL and clicking the "add item to favorites" button is just as easy as "add to wishlist!" on Amazon. It's like fake shopping.. for things I really, really want and don't want to wait for other people to buy for me.
AND: SOON, THE POOL WILL BE READY. I dunked my legs in it after powerwashing the deck (FILTH) and it was still FREEEEEEZING. But after a couple of these 98-degree days (the "wind chill" on my weather widget said it was 102 at some point!) it should be warmish.. mayybeee.. pool. | comments: 1 comment or Leave a comment |
